Short Fiction

We Are Looking for Volunteer Staff Readers

The Quiet Reader is reopening submissions and preparing the next edition, and we are expanding our team of volunteer Staff Readers.

If you love reading short fiction and essays, and if you enjoy forming and articulating an honest opinion about what works (and what doesn’t), this may be for you.

How It Works

We now use our own TQR Review Portal.

When a story is assigned to you, you receive an automatic notification by email. You log in, read the piece, and leave a brief review and your rating (0-10).

Each assessment remains independent. On our side, we see a clear overview of all ratings and remarks. An average score emerges for each submission, and the editorial team uses that data, alongside the written feedback, to determine which stories move forward toward a possible publication.

The system is clean, structured, and respectful of your time.

Time Commitment

There is no fixed weekly obligation. Stories are assigned weekly, but don’t expect a handful of them every week. Our pre-selection procedure is harsh. Most submissions can be read and reviewed within 20–40 minutes, depending on length. You simply respond when assigned.

Consistency matters more than volume.

Why Become a Staff Reader?

You will:

• Strengthen your critical reading and writing skills
• Engage with unpublished, contemporary voices
• Contribute directly to shaping a literary magazine

Above all, you become part of a thoughtful editorial process.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who donates their time and judgement to this magazine. The Quiet Reader exists because people are willing to read carefully.

If you are interested in joining the team, email us at thequietreadermagazine@gmail.com

Tell us a little about yourself and your interest in literature, and we will be in touch.

We look forward to reading with you.
